Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, came out in their numbers to protest the contused detention of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. The protest which was initially peaceful turned bloody when the police fired shots at the protesters.
The protest claimed the life of a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and a reporter, a serving corp member with Channels television. Public and private properties were also set ablaze.
The shites accuses the police of firing live ammunitions at their members shot at our members, and injuring members of the public. According to the IMN not fewer than 11 of their members were gunned down.
The sects also accuse the police of sending paid agents in plain clothes to infiltrate their meetings and disturb public peace in the name of IMN.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, confirmed DCP Umar's killing, claiming he was killed by the Shi'ite protesters.
In a statement, the police PRO said over 3,000 Shi'ites took part in the protest added that two Assistant Superintendents of Police were injured. He also confirmed that the Channels TV reporter initially sustained serious injuries.
The police added that the protesters burnt the National Emergency Management Agency Response Post close to the Federal Secretariat and two vehicles.
